A suitable 2 or 3 day hike as a warm up to Mt. Fuji?

by Jon

Hi Gary,

I am booked to climb mount fuji on 29th August, with a tour because I wanted the transport and hut sorted. Can you suggest a suitable 2 or 3 day hike we can do earlier in the week as a warm up, I.e. accessible from Tokyo and up to about 3000 metres.

Also any advice on booking huts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

I'd recommend Kita-dake.

Jon, I'd recommend Kita-dake, Japan's 2nd highest peak. Here's an excerpt from my Kita-dake page linked below:

"Mt. Kita-dake may be Japan's 2nd highest mountain, but it really doesn't have to play 2nd fiddle to Mt. Fuji. It's only a little bit farther from Tokyo, the views from the summit are just as striking, and has only a fraction of the crowds."

As for making reservations @ the huts, perhaps my reply to Nina on this page will be helpful.

Best wishes with your climbs...

Gary

p.s. If you're feeling overly ambitious and are in good physical condition, while you're up on Kita-dake, you might as well knock out the other 2 peaks that form the "Shiranesanzan," The 3 White Summits.
