Anywhere to park in Kitazawa-toge or Hirogawara?

by Kevin Hasenauer
(Utsunomiya-shi, Japan)

Hi Gary.
Thanks for all the information on this site.
My friend and I are looking to do this hike mid September.
We were hoping that we could drop 1 car off at the hut just below Kaikomagatake.
Then proceed to Hirogawara to start our 3-4 day hike.
Can you offer any more insight on the parking or road access? Can we drive on Hwy. 37?

How about the Shiranesanzan?
by: Gary Wolff

p.s. Kevin, another option is to start hiking from Narada up to Mt. Notori-dake so you can knock out the Shiranesanzan (Kita-dake/Ai-no-dake/Notori-dake): https://www.garyjwolff.com/mt-notori-dake-and-the-shiranesanzan.html

This way you can avoid having to worry about the frequency in mid-Sept. of the bus schedule to Hirogawara, depending on what day of the week you arrive.

One drawback, though, is that you'll be starting from about 1000m elev. compared to the 1500m @ Hirogawara...

You need to take a bus
by: Gary Wolff

Sorry Kevin, I couldn't read your VERY small map. :-)

Private cars are restricted on Hwy. 37 past Narada (奈良田), so you'll need to park there (or take the bus from Kofu Station). Supposedly, the Narada parking area has 377 free spaces.

Bus schedules from Narada (or Kofu Station) to Hirogawara (広河原) & from Kitazawa-toge (北沢峠) (below Kai-koma) back to Hirogawara (and the other bus back to Narada) after you finish your hike are here: http://yamanashikotsu.co.jp/noriai/2014hirogawara2.htm

Best wishes...

[Also, by mid-Sept. the road between the Yashajintoge trailhead (夜叉神峠登山口) and Hirogawara, closed since early July due to a rock slide, should be open again, so you should be able to park @ the Ashiyasu municipal parking area (市営芦安駐車場) (650 free spaces) and take the bus from there to Hirogawara. After the road re-opens (maybe by the end of August), the bus schedule for this Ashiyasu-to-Hirogawara connection will be posted @ the link above.]
