Can I camp out at the top of the Mt. Fuji summit?

by Chris
(USA)

Hi Gary -

Heading out to summit Fuji this August - Wondering if you would know if it is possible to camp out at the top of the Mt. Fuji summit (no tent, using a alpine bivy and sleeping bag) or if you would know anyone to contact about this.

I know that tents aren't allowed during climbing season, but I'm getting different answers for bivy. Can't seem to find an official answer to this minor detail (if I can't, then I'm thinking of reserving a spot at 10th station).

Thanks - Chris

Camping of any sort is expressly forbidden anywhere on Mount Fuji.
by: Gary Wolff

Chris, I’m not up-to-speed on the latest Mt. Fuji regulations, but over the past quarter-century, I have read numerous times online that camping of any sort is expressly forbidden anywhere on Mount Fuji.

This could be in part because Fujisan, unlike most of Japan’s other highest peaks (I’ve climbed 38 of the highest 50), lies within a national park.

Also, in years past with the main Yoshida trail having recorded as many as 10,000 climbers in a single day, where would you even be able to lay down a bivy without getting trampled to death?

Although you won’t get a lot of real sleep in a Mt. Fuji mountain hut (https://www.garyjwolff.com/mt-fuji-mountain-huts.html), you might find it money well spent if the weather suddenly goes south and you need to seek refuge from a sleet storm with gale force winds in near-freezing temps.

Happy trails and thanks for visiting my site...

Cheers,
Gary
