Can you help me find a mountain I climbed many years ago?

by Mark
(Germany)

hi gary!

i wonder if you can help me find a mountain i climbed many years ago?

i thought it was the 2nd highest in japan and called date (kita?), but i also thought it meant (white or black or horse) (hakusan?).

there was snow in the summer, and a hut/lodge with a rotemburo, which then at least was shared by men and women.

there was a distinctive long *sharp* ridge near the top. at the top near the hut were some dark craggy or pocked boulders. i don't remember if there were 2 huts, one partway up.

the trail led past the edge of the snow, and there were snow caves.

i don't recall a view of mt. fuji.

Perhaps it's Shirouma-dake.

Hi Mark,

Yes, the 2nd highest peak in Japan is Kita-dake, and the 26th highest peak is Shirouma-dake (meaning "white horse peak").

The rotemburo, a real rarity in the Japanese Alps, you mentioned could be Yari Onsen, which I visited on my way down from Shirouma-dake. There are a couple pics of its entrance at the bottom of my Shirouma-dake Flickr page: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjp2vjWw

And Japan's highest peaks are listed on this page:

Best wishes & thanks for visiting my site...

Auf wiedersehen,
Gary
