Do they require 100 yen coins for the branding of your hiking stick?

Hi Gary,

Firstly, like everyone else, thank you so much for such an informative website and especially for keeping it updated as you do. I really appreciate how you highlight topics that you've updated, it's very helpful.

Now for my question. I know that I need to bring 100 yen coins for using the toilets at the mountain huts along the way. However I wanted to know if you need 100 yen coins for paying for the branding of the hiking sticks, because if so, I'm going to need a heck of a lot of 100 yen coins. So I was just hoping for confirmation that I can pay for the branding with other coins/notes and get change?

Thanks for your help!

No, I don't think so.

Thanks for your kind words, Akiba.

No, I don't believe the huts require 100-yen coins for the stamps, although I'm sure exact change is appreciated if possible.

Unlike the toilets, which are unattended and usually have just a little box with a hole cut in the top of it for you to drop your coins in (and thus cannot give back change), the huts on the other hand are a full-scale commercial operation, not only renting out the accommodation space, but also selling food/drinks, supplies, equipment, souvenirs, and even oxygen bottles.

Thanks for visiting my site and best wishes with your climb!

Cheers,
Gary
