Golden Week Japan Alps Hiking

by Elizabeth
(Omura, Nagasaki)

Hi Gary,

I am looking for a four-day trek in the Japan Alps - doesn`t matter where! Just something beautiful, where we could do hut-to-hut.

Do you have any suggestions for a good route that time of year?

I know it will be crowded, so I want to book things quickly!

Also do you have any suggestions on good links to find huts, or how to book them?

Thank you! You are inspiring!!

I'd wait till there's less snow.

Thanks for your kind words, Elizabeth.

I'm not a big fan of snow, so I've never done any off-season climbing in Japan. So I'm afraid I'm not a very good information source for you if you want to climb during Golden Week, when a number of people die up in Japan's alpine country every year because of all the snow.

My favorite place for climbing during the July & August climbing season is the Kamikochi area in the Kita Alps, without question one of the most beautiful places in all of Japan.

I'd suggest you check out my Oku-hotaka-dake/Yari-ga-take page where you can probably figure out a good 4-day trek as well as find a few links to some mountain huts in the area, although I doubt many, if any, will be open in early May.

If you'd like a second opinion, I'd suggest you post your question also in the Hiking in Japan Facebook group. They are all very helpful there.

Best wishes and happy trails...
