How do I avoid the crowds when climbing Japan's mountains in August?

by Yuto
(Japan)

Hi there Mr. Wolff,

I hope you are having a good day. I live in Osaka and am quite a fan of climbing mountains, and although I haven’t done many of the big ones here, I am excited to start.

I read your book yesterday and wanted to ask if you had any suggestions for less crowded areas during August. I was gonna head out to Tokushima or Hakuba from 8/16 - over the weekend, and my only dislikes are large crowds lol.

I climb to get away from it all. Thanks for your time.

Try to avoid weekends altogether, especially the extended Obon weekend
by: Gary Wolff

Yuto, I'm not familiar with hiking in Tokushima, but you'd be well advised to avoid any of Japan's alpine country during the extended Obon weekend, 8/11-8/15. Trails, huts, buses, & trains will all be a nightmare.

And by all means, avoid Fujisan at all costs during that time period: https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji.html#congestion

Despite a bit dangerous in view of all the accidents that have occurred there thru the years, I think Mt. Shirouma-dake is a good choice, plus you can enjoy the open-air Yari Onsen right on the trail.

Maybe you'll be ok from 8/16. If your schedule permits, I'd try to avoid the weekends altogether. Happy trails and thanks for buying my book & visiting my site...

Cheers,
Gary
