If we climb up for the sunset, will we have enough time to get back down before dark?

If my husband and I climb up for the sunset, will we have enough time to get back down before dark? This would be during the last week In August 2014. I personally don't want to sleep in a hut. Thank you for this wonderful information. Your site is beyond helpful.

Thanks for your kind words, but surely you must be joking.

Since darkness usually occurs only 30 minutes or so after sunset, if you're planning to view the sunset from the summit, this would obviously be impossible.

Furthermore, if you're hiking up Mt. Fuji's main Yoshida Trail, once you reach the top (on the northeast side of the peak), you'd still have to hike 30 minutes or so over to the west side of the summit cone to view the sunset.

In fact, to my knowledge, because of its southerly alignment, the only Mt. Fuji trail from which the sunset is visible is the Fujinomiya Trail. But even if you were able to see the sunset from, say, the New 7th Station, you'd still be looking at a 35 min. hike back down to the 5th Station.

More info on the Fujinomiya Trail here: Climbing Mt. Fuji's Fujinomiya Trail

Best wishes!
