Looking for guided tour that does Mt. Fuji Fujinomiya or Subashiri trail or combination.

Dear Mr. Gary Wolff,

Very informative site, you have. Thank you for your efforts.
I am outside of Japan and wish to plan a trip to climb Fujisan for the 1st time this July.

Guided Tour
Looking for guided tour that does Fujinomiya or Subashiri trail or combination. Wish to avoid the busy Yoshida trail. Please suggest if you know of any tour guide company that do not charge hips for their service? e.g Y86,000 or Y323,000 for 1 person is real crazy prices to me.

Insurance
All insurers from my country do not give coverage for mountaineering above 3000m. Those who provide coverage have various exclusions that pretty much render them not useful. e.g. not covering medical and evacuation due to mountain sickness, accidents or disease etc.

Appreciate your suggestions.

I came across WorldNomads. My concern is the claim process and success rate. Claims are conducted online and I am concern with the response time and personal data protection. A considerable amount of personal data would have to be submitted during a claim process.

Appreciate your input / insights.
Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Mack

Licensed Mt. Fuji guided tour operators now require insurance policies.
by: Mack

Dear Mr. Gary Wolff,

Thank you for your message.

Insurance companies that I have checked with require a licensed guided tour operator – otherwise, the policy is void. In addition, since it is my first mountaineering trip in a country that I don’t speak the language, its best to err on the safe side to obtain the services of a licensed guide.

You might have noticed that some guide services now request a policy when making bookings on their site. Willer Tours packaged its Fuji Climb tour with a 10 million yen collateral insurance policy (although they did not go into details on the coverage and claims especially for foreigners). Should anything untold happens, evacuation from the mountain & medical costs is an expensive affair, I would imagine.

Travel insurance is important and I have made successful claims for several of my travels (not mountaineering) for medical, damage to baggage etc. You never know when you would need it - not just for the financial compensation, but advice over the phone on various emergency matters.

Of course, we do not want anything untold happen and hope the trip would be pleasant and enjoyable. Anyway, it's back to the drawing board in hunting for a suitable one.

Thank you again for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Mack

Sorry, I'm not aware of any...
by: Gary Wolff

Thanks, Mack.

I'm not privy to any feedback on any of the guide services listed on my website (https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji-page2.html#34) that do tours up the Mt. Fuji Fujinomiya or Subashiri trails, but I don’t think you really need one.

Here’s my report from when I did the Fujinomiya trail 6 years ago: https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fujis-fujinomiya-trail.html

As for insurance, I realize it’s probably a good idea, but I’ve climbed 38 of Japan’s highest 50 peaks, including all of the highest 29 and have never bought insurance, so I’m afraid I can’t help you in that area.

Happy trails…

Gary
