"Maori" - my OC teacher

by Ai Mizoguchi
(Tokyo, Japan)

I’ve never been to NZ, but I have a friend who is from NZ. He was my high school Oral Communications teacher. He’s also Maori. I’ve heard that NZ is famous for rugby, so he plays rugby. He often took part in my high school rugby team’s practice. He is a good player, so I liked watching the rugby team's practice games.

He taught us Maori culture. What is an impressive thing is the Maori dance “haka.” Haka is a traditional dance from the Maoris of NZ. It is a posture dance with shouted accompaniment and it is performed by a group.

He told us his experiences in his school days. He was discriminated against by his high school teacher because he is Maori. When I heard that story, I felt sad. He is a very kind and good man, so I can’t understand why he was bullied.

A rugby-playing Maori
by: Gary Wolff

Ai, it sounds like you had a good experience by having a high school teacher who was a Maori from New Zealand.

I think you are lucky to have had such a wonderful experience where you could learn about Maori culture.

Thanks for sharing...
