NZ, Japan, earthquakes, and my experience!!

by Risa Tanno
(Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan)

In NZ in February, there was a big earthquake (M6.4) where 28 Japanese people died. Earthquakes are very dangerous so I felt sorry for them. But a month later, in Sendai, Japan a much bigger earthquake occurred. Additionally, a tsunami!! I couldn't expect that.

At that time I was just in Sendai, because it is my hometown. My Sendai's house is near a mountain, so I and my family were all safe. I'd ever had an experience with such a big earthquake. :( I got so scared...It was M9.0!!!

I've never been to NZ. But I felt something familiar to NZ after the earthquake. I want to go there in the future.

Japanese empathy for NZ earthquake
by: Gary Wolff

I can understand your feelings, Risa, in being able to understand the feelings of New Zealanders about earthquakes.

Both Japan and New Zealand are on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area of high volcanic and seismic activity around the Pacific rim, including East Asia and the west coast of the Americas.

Yes, you're right, it's scary stuff.

So happy you and your family were safe !
