Shirouma-dake area mountain hut closing dates

by Perry
(Australia)

Hi Gary,

I saw some of your insightful comments on hiking in Japan and ask that you please give us some guidance.

My wife and I plus another couple are looking to do a 3-4 day walk either near Kamikochi or we have also spotted a walk Shirouma-dake to Ogisawa (in a book called "Hiking in Japan") in very early October 2014.

From what the book says, we like the latter option but are having trouble finding huts for this walk on the internet. Here is one site that looks promising (http://www.hakuba-sanso.co.jp/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/2014hakuba_english.pdf)

From the site, it seems that some of the hut locations along the walk (i.e. locations suggested in the book) are closed by early October. Can you please let us know if we are interpreting this correctly (i.e. dumb Australians) and if there are any other hut options on this walk?

Thank you.

Perry

Mountain huts usually start closing down in late Sept./early Oct.
by: Gary Wolff

Perry, if you're referring to the Lonely Planet's guide published in 2009 (http://amzn.to/15Iibvn), that's probably one of the best resources (in English) for mountain hut info.

Yes, as climbing season begins winding down in late Sept./early Oct., mountain huts also usually start closing down. By comparison, this page shows closing dates for huts on the main climbing route up Mt. Fuji: https://www.garyjwolff.com/mt-fuji-mountain-huts.html

I'm not aware of any list or website for mountain huts in the Shirouma-dake area (other than the one you kindly sent me, thanks), so your best option might be to just call or skype them (hut ph. numbers are in your "Hiking in Japan"). Usually there's at least 1 person who speaks a little English, often a college student working there for the summer.

If you change your mind about Kamikochi, these links might help, although I'm afraid the info is already a bit dated:

- http://kita-alps.yamagoya.gr.jp/welcome/09.pdf (map of Kamikochi area huts)
- http://kita-alps.yamagoya.gr.jp/welcome/08.pdf (Kamikochi hut ph. #s and URLs)
- http://kita-alps.yamagoya.gr.jp/cottage-map (Google map of Kamikochi area huts)

Best wishes...

Cheers,
Gary
