Suggestions for 2+ day mountain hike in Feb/March?

by Jonathan
(London)

Hi there,

What a great website.

I travel to Japan a lot and am a keen hiker and amateur mountaineer (basic Grade I - III Scottish Winter). I've been wanting to do a hiking trip for a while in Japan but information is scarce and I've never got around to it.

I'm going to be over in Japan again in a few months. Ideally, I'd like to do a two day (or more) hike/summit with some wild camping at the end of February. Do you have any suggestions?

I have all the kit (four season sleeping bags, four season tent, crampons, ice axe etc) except for snowshoes (though I could pick some up before I leave if needed).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Jonathan

Jonathan, I’m afraid I can’t help. Not a big fan of winter climbing for a million reasons. Here are just a few: https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji.html#2

What I’d recommend is that you consult the "Hiking in Japan" Facebook group, where a number of winter climbers hang out: https://facebook.com/groups/9872778764

Please also note that mountain rescues in Japan can run tens of thousands of dollars, so I recommend insurance.

Best wishes and thanks for visiting my site...
