We would like to do a climb, thinking Mount Jonen-dake

by Pat
(Thailand)

Hello!

I am a fan of your hiking Japan posts. My partner and I are planning to visit the Matsumoto/Kamikochi area during Golden Week this year, and we would like to do a climb, thinking Mount Jonen-dake.

Could you recommend where we should stay the night to start the climb and also where to stay after we come down from the mountain?

Any tips you may have on doing this climb, we would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you very much!

Best,
Pat

I stayed in a ryokan about a 20-minute drive from the trailhead

Thanks, Pat.

I'm not a big fan of winter climbing and let's be clear... Golden Week is still considered "winter" up in Japan's alpine country. Every year I sadly read in the news about a rash of mountain climbing accidents during Golden Week, and a number of them resulting in fatalities.

There are some nice hikes starting from Kamikochi that won't require you to get up into the white stuff: http://www.kamikochi.org/mountain-courses/start-in-kamikochi.html

As for Mt. Jonen-dake, I'm afraid I don't have any more recent info other than what is already on my 6-year-old Jonen-dake page: https://www.garyjwolff.com/mt-jonen-dake.html

Before that hike, I stayed in a ryokan about a 20-minute drive from the trailhead, but my aging brain doesn't recall the name. My very gracious friend drove me to the trailhead around 5 am to begin my 11-hour Jonen-dake day hike.

You might also try posting your question in the "Hiking in Japan" Facebook group, a very robust and helpful forum: https://www.facebook.com/groups/9872778764/

Happy trails...

Cheers,
Gary
