What I know about Saudi Arabia

by Naoto "Nao" Hojo
(Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan)

To tell the truth, I have no idea about what country Saudi Arabia is. My image of Saudi Arabia is oil money, soccer, and Muslims. It is an unbelievable fact for me that a bottle of oil is much cheaper than a bottle of water in Saudi Arabia. A pool is a symbol of power and money, so Saudi Arabian rich people want to have a pool with their home.

I was also surprised that a Saudi Arabian man can have more than one wife at the same time. Of course, a man has to treat wives equally. They think a marriage is a contract. Before their marriage they decide on a lot of conditions, for example the conditions of divorce, how many he wives can be with etc.

Anyway, I realized that I have no idea about Arabic culture and it was difficult to get the information. We tend to be afraid of Arabic culture because we have no idea about their culture. I think we should know about their culture.
