What is the best time to hike up for sunrise?

by Niki
(Malaysia)

Hi Gary,

How are you? I am planing to do a day trip to hike Mt Fuji. Last year, i hiked Mt. Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. My speed is 8 hours hike to laban rata which i'm using Mesilau (2000m) to laban rata (3273m) total 8km.

My questions:
1.) what is the best time to hike up for sunrise?
2.) if i'm start at 7 or 8 pm , do you think i could reach there before 4 am?

Kindly advice.

Thanks!

Regards,
Niki

Hi Niki,

Here are some sample recommended climbing plans:

Yes, I think so, if you are good shape, barring no traffic jams (some sections of trail are too narrow or steep for you to pass slower hikers), bad weather (see my postscript below), or altitude sickness, which struck me last August when I climbed up Fuji via the Fujinomiya Trail (https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fujis-fujinomiya-trail.html), the first time that ever happened to me after nearly a half century of mountain climbing. :-(

The first time I climbed Mt. Fuji, we started hiking around 10 pm & arrived at the top in time for the sunrise. Here are the hiking times for the main Yoshida trail: https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji.html#5

Best wishes !!

Cheers,
Gary

p.s. Be careful up there! Big accident on Monday in the nearby Chuo Alps: http://www.whiotv.com/news/ap/military/3-south-korean-climbers-dead-1-missing-in-japan/nY7hn/
