Where to start the Mt. Kita-dake hike?

by Alex

Hi there, in regards to starting the Mt. Kita-dake hike say around 10:00 hrs, would it be best to start where you finished and walk up towards the hut from there?

And do you need to do a booking on the huts?

Will it be a 3 hour transport ride from Tokyo to Hirogawara trailhead?
by: Alex

Hey there,

Just reading upon what you wrote to confirm in total, it will be a 3 hour transport ride from Tokyo to Hirogawara trailhead?

With that being said, my plan is to depart from Tokyo early at 0800hrs and arrive at the starting point by 1100hrs. Will that be enough time to get to the huts that is on the far right hand side?

Yes & Yes
by: Gary Wolff

Yes, Alex, I believe Hirogawara is the most popular starting point for scaling Mt. Kita-dake, accessible by bus from Kofu Station.

But in view of the afternoon thundershowers that are common in Japan’s high country during the summer, I think a 10 am start is a little bit late to hit the trail. If possible, I think around sunrise is better.

And yes, during the busy summer climbing season, reservations are recommended at the huts. They’ll ask for your name, phone number, the number of people in your party, which dates you wish to stay, and whether you need dinner, breakfast, or a lunch box. If you speak slowly in very clear easy English, there shouldn’t be any major communication issues.

Happy trails and thanks for visiting my site…
