Where to stay overnight on Mt. Fuji's Fujinomiya Trail?

by Bob
(Virginia)

My wife and I will be staying in Japan in late August / early September, and plan to climb Fuji using the Fujinomiya Trail. We want to go up in the afternoon, stay overnight, then get up early to see the sunrise. Where would be best for us to stay?

I was thinking 8th station, but I'm wondering if the time required to get to the top from there would make it infeasible for seeing the sunrise.

We are not experienced hikers and though we are training to get ready, I'm afraid I'm going to underestimate the required time that 2nd morning.

Would the 9th station be a better bet? Also concerned about going too high without acclimating first.

Any advice appreciated!

It depends...

Bob, where you decide to spend the night on the Fujinomiya Trail obviously will depend on what time you start hiking in the afternoon and what kind of average hiking times you and your wife can maintain.

This map shows elevations and hiking times between the Fujinomiya Trail mountain huts: https://www.garyjwolff.com/support-files/mt_fuji_2014_fujinomiya_trail_map.pdf

And this page shows the Fujinomiya Trail mountain hut phone numbers: http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/arrange/travel/practical/pdf/Mt.Hut_Mt.Fuji.pdf

As a point of reference, in August 2012 I climbed the Fujinomiya Trail and stayed at the Fujikan summit mountain hut (Chojo Fujikan, 頂上富士館), at the very top. It was the highest altitude I ever slept at in over 2 decades of climbing Japanese peaks, and it's the 1st and only time I ever got altitude sickness... a very unpleasant experience indeed.

Here is my write-up on that trip: Climbing Mt. Fuji's Fujinomiya Trail (富士宮登山道)

Hope this helps. Best wishes and have a great trip to Japan...
