How do I get back to Shinjuku from the Mt. Fuji 5th Station after 17:00 pm?

G'day Gary, thanks for all the information on here. Super helpful! I'm hoping to climb Fuji on 6th of July 2023.

I have found plenty of information about how to get there from Shinjuku (planning on taking the express Highway Bus from Shinjuku station to 5th station at 6:45am, arriving at 9:20am).

The last Highway Bus from 5th station to Shinjuku is at 17:00pm. Given that I will probably start my hike around 10:00am, this gives me only 7 hours to get up and down.

My worry is that if I am not down in time (ideally I wouldn't want to rush it so I can take in the view), I will be stranded at 5th station until the next morning. I would really like to avoid staying in a hut/staying overnight.

Are there any other ways to get back to Shinjuku in the evening from the 5th station?

Thank you!

Jordan

Hopefully you can catch a later bus down to Kawaguchiko Station

G' day, Jordan. Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, a day trip climb up Fujisan all the way from Shinjuku is a pretty tall order.

And to be honest, I think going up and down in just 7 hours might be quite a stretch, but if you're super fit and an experienced climber, and your name is Superman, I guess it's possible. :-)

One concern is the disturbing incidence of altitude sickness among foreigners every year doing quick up & down so-called bullet climbing (dangan-tozan, 弾丸登山). More details on the dangers of bullet climbing are here: https://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji-page2.html#47

A number of the more recent official publications show average climbing times at least 6 hours up & around 4 hours down, which are hiking times only... not counting rest breaks.

There are also buses down to Kawaguchiko Station where you can catch a train back to Shinjuku. Although the 2023 timetable hasn't been published yet, according to the schedule from last year, you could catch a bus from the 5th station down to Kawaguchiko Station as late as 18:40 (https://www.japan-guide.com/bus/fuji_season.html).

Another option might be to rustle up a few other climbers in the same situation and share a taxi back down to Kawaguchiko Station.

It’d be nice if you could stay overnight (the night before or after your hike) closer to the Fuji Subaru 5th Station trailhead, so you don't have to spend 5 hours getting to/from the trailhead the same day you scale Fujisan. Accordingly, depending on the availability, if your schedule permits, you may wish to consider the capsule hotel at the 5th Station Fujikyu Unjokaku: https://www.unjokaku.jp/en/stay/

Anyways, sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but hopefully I've given you some food for thought. :-)

Happy trails and thanks for visiting my site…
