How do you climb Mt. Jonen from Kamikochi?

by Allison
(USA)

Hello!

I am looking for a good mountain climb based out of Kamikochi. I am considering Yarigatake and Jonen-Dake. I am afraid that Yarigatake may prove to be too challenging for me. Is Jonen-dake an easier/safer hike and how do you get there from Kamikochi?

Thanks!!!

Yarigatake climb
by: Rusky/ Sydney

Yarigatake got twin ladders installed on summit cone to facilitate two-way highway. The whole approach from Kamikochi and very short summit climb is a walk in the park. Nothing to worry about.
Happy trekking!
Kind regards,

Thanks so much for this info! Your blog has been so helpful!

How do you get to the Ichinosawa trailhead?? We will be passing through Matsumoto on our way to Kamikochi.

And is Yarigatake very challenging? I know the summit park involves chains and ladders, but what about the rest of the way up from Kamikochi

Do you think there trails are ok to hike at the beginning of October?

Thanks so much!!

It's 11 hours of hiking from Kamikochi to Mt. Jonen-dake
by: Gary Wolff

Yes, Allison, Mt. Jonen-dake is much easier than Mt. Yari-ga-take, but it'll take you 11 hours (hiking time only) from Kamikochi, via the Azusagawa & Yokoo-sanso, over to the ridge between Mt. Choga-take & Mt. Jonen-dake.

On the other hand, if you follow the same route I used and which is shown on my Mt. Jonen-dake page, it should only take you around 10 hours round trip from the Ichinosawa trailhead.

Actually, Mt. Jonen-dake is one of just a few of Japan's highest mountains that I've done as a day hike.

Best wishes...
