Where can we store our backpacks while climbing Mt. Fuji?

by Joseph

Dear Gary Wolff,

Your site is amazing! Tons of great info. I do have a question that I am hoping you can help me with.

I am planning on climbing Fuji July 2 this year with one other person. We will have backpacking packs with us as our luggage. Where can we store them while we our climbing?

We are coming from Osaka so I don't want to travel to Shinjuku Station to store them there since that will add considerable travel time. I have seen vague descriptions of coin lockers at the Subaru Yoshida fifth station or at Kawaguchiko. However, will these be big enough for backpacks?

Thanks for any help!

Joseph

You might try the Hostel Mt. Fuji-Fukuya
by: Gary Wolff

The only place I'm aware of is the hostel recommended several years ago by a gentleman from Texas who scaled Mt. Fuji and mentioned in this FAQ:
Where can I eat, sleep, and sightsee at the base of Mt. Fuji?

If that doesn't work, Trip Advisor's Fuji Travel Forum is usually a good source:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g303147-i9930-Fuji_Shizuoka_Prefecture_Tokai_Chubu.html

Happy trails & best wishes...

other options?
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the wonderful page. We booked Taiyokan Mountain Hut (Subashiri Trail at 3,090m) Sept 1 . Is there a hotel or place to stay you recommend where we can store our luggage and stay the night after we descend?
Thanks in advance

About 15-20 large coin lockers
by: Gary Wolff

I doubt there are any exact counts, Joe. I guess sometimes we just have to take pot luck. :-)

But the Kawaguchiko tourist information center said there are about 15-20 large coin lockers.

Best wishes...

How many large-size lockers are at the Subaru Yoshida Fifth station and/or the Kawaguchiko station?
by: Joseph

Thanks, I did see that page. I am wondering how many large size lockers are at the Subaru Yoshida Fifth station and/or the Kawaguchiko station. I have scoured the internet but it doesn't seem there any reliable accounts of what the locker situation is like.

We are going July 2 so I am thinking it is early enough in the season lockers should be available at least at Kawaguchiko. I don't know if I want to chance it though.

Thanks for any input!

Joe

Yes, as long as the backpacks aren't TOO big. :-)
by: Gary Wolff

Thanks a lot, Joseph.

I believe this is the info you're looking for: Can I leave my large backpack in a locker at the train station and take only a smaller pack with me to climb?

I guess it goes without saying, but the availability of the larger size lockers on any given day & time is a crapshoot. I've heard some people also make arrangements at their hotels to keep their luggage while they climb Fuji-san.

Have a nice climb...

Cheers,
Gary
