Which day would be best to climb Mt. Fuji between August 10th-17th, 2024?

Hi Gary,

Your site is fantastic, I was just wondering if I could get your opinion on hiking Mt. Fuji.

I'll be in Japan from August 10th -> August 17th and am planning to hike Mt Fuji but wondering what day would be best. I understand that it is busiest on weekends and that Obon will also be underway during some of this time.

I don't plan to follow the Yoshida trail due to its popularity, probably either the Subashiri or Fujinomiya trail... recommendations welcome.

I have experience on long hikes 30km+ so I don't believe that should be an issue.

Cheers,
Luke

I've been looking at the various mountain huts...

Hey Gary,

Thanks for the quick reply, I wasn't aware of that public holiday. I think I'll go with the 15/16th as that seems to be the best option for me.

I've been looking at the various mountain huts and was just wondering if there was anything I should be checking for in particular?

I've currently just been looking at what's available and how high they are as hoping to minimize the time hiking on the 2nd day to get to the summit for sunrise as I'm not exactly a morning person :)

Yeah, I noticed the trails join up, so it definitely increases options for huts but like you say, it's going to be very busy indeed...

Thanks,
Luke

15th/16th or the 14th/15th
by: Gary Wolff

Luke, Obon this year supposedly will be August 13-15, and Monday, August 12 is a national holiday (carryover holiday for the Sun. 8/11 Mountain Day national holiday), so that creates a 3-day weekend (10th-12th).

Therefore, because of bus schedules, etc., Mt. Fuji can’t realistically be climbed as a day hike, if I were you I would choose the 15th/16th or the 14th/15th.

Also, as you may be aware, the Subashiri trail merges with the Yoshida trail at the 8th station, so from there to the summit is usually crazy crowded.

I had a very delightful climb up the Fujinomiya trail back in 2012. The view of the beautiful blue Suruga Bay down below was quite stunning: Climbing Mt. Fuji's Fujinomiya Trail

Thanks for the kind words, happy trails, and thanks for visiting my site...

Cheers,
Gary
