How hard is it to get a Mt. Fuji mountain hut reservation at a higher elevation station?

by Dylan

Hi, I have some questions about reserving a hut on Mt. Fuji. I'll be in Tokyo a few days before climbing season and am attempting to climb on July 1st. I'd like to book a higher elevation station like the 8th, but the lower level stations are open for reservations a bit sooner it seems.

How hard is it to get a higher mountain hut? I don't want to wait for the 8th to be open and miss the 7th station and have nowhere to rest before the sunrise. I'm not sure how busy the trail would be considering it's the first day the trail opens.

We're climbing the Yoshida trail and I'm going to propose at the summit. I hope my girl can make it there, lol.

Glad to see a fellow Houstonian might be able to shine some light on this for me!

Some higher elevation huts begin accepting reservations in early May
by: Gary Wolff

Dylan, to my knowledge most huts will not charge you for cancellation if it’s done at least 21 days before your reservation date, so you might consider going ahead and reserving a spot in a 7th station hut, like, Kamaiwakan where I stayed 3 years ago... and then cancel that if you are lucky enough to get a reservation at an 8th station hut like the Fujisan "Hotel" which apparently this year will begin accepting online reservations on May 10.

But if you snooze, you lose… last year almost all huts were fully booked for the entire season by the end of May.

I think it’s a good idea to sleep at the 8th station if possible… I’m not exactly a young spring chicken anymore and it just about killed me getting up to the top of the Yoshida trail from the 7th station. :-)

And maybe you already know this, but the sunrise is visible basically anywhere above the 6th station, so even though its a spiritual thing for many climbers, it's not really necessary to be at the summit for sunrise where it can get insanely crowded there.... like on a Houston freeway during rush hour. :-)

Happy trails, happy marriage (*), and thanks for visiting my site…

Cheers,
Gary

p.s. Apparently Goraikokan at the 8.5 station will start accepting reservations from 5/7: https://www.goraikoukan.jp/
